Mapping New Frontiers - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Administrative Justice
Conference Co-Chairs:
Conference Coordinator:
CCAT's Annual Conference for 2012 will take a fresh look at issues of interest to all tribunal members and senior staff.
In a stimulating series of plenary sessions, workshops and round tables, speakers and participants together will explore a wide variety of topics.
This is the perfect opportunity to learn, to comment on current practices and developments, and to network with colleagues.
Plenary sessions will include:
- "Cowboys and Aliens": Mapping New Frontiers in Administrative Justice - A visionary and sometimes provocative look at the future of administrative tribunals.
- "Friendly Persuasion": Reasons - the sine qua non of a system of administrative law that inspires public confidence.
- "The (re)Searchers": Exploring the New Frontiers of Administrative Justice Research - a discussion of some of the latest thinking on the evolution of administrative justice.
- "Lonesome Cowboy" and "The Magnificent Seven": Access to Administrative Justice - An overview of the shared experience of the unrepresented or self-represented, and a discussion among the Magnificent Seven of ways to make the trails smoother.
- "Blazing Saddles": The Use of Social Media, Media Relations and Electronic Communications - an exploration of trends in social media, as well as the opportunities and pitfalls of using electronic tools to make administrative justice more accessible.
Plenary sessions are complemented by workshops, where the wide range of topics will include:
- Constitutional protection of administrative independence
- The role of tribunals in appeals and judicial reviews
- Privacy issues
- Access to administrative justice
- Ethics for tribunals
- First Nations' participation in proceedings
- The Ombudsman's perspective
- Paperless hearings and electronic evidence
In addition, four highly participatory round tables will deal with:
- Human rights issues
- Labour relations
- Workers' compensation
- Staff issues at agencies, boards and commissions
Guiding us through this rich array of topics will be leading thinkers and practitioners involved in every aspect of administrative justice: judges, academics, tribunal members and staff.
